Church Gate · Loughborough

Everything here was made while you were asleep.

We are an artisan bakery on the pedestrianised end of Church Gate. Croissants filled the morning you eat them, Danish pastries, cruffins, and the cinnamon morning buns that rarely survive until lunchtime — all of it mixed, proved and baked from scratch in the kitchen behind our counter.

The counter

Four things worth setting an alarm for

Artisan croissants and coffee is what we do. Our case changes with the day’s bake — the menu is never fixed for long — but these four are the ones we are known for.

  • A cruffin: spiralled laminated dough crowned with cream and a biscuit

    The cruffin

Croissant dough, laminated and rolled into a muffin tin, so it bakes into a spiral with a crisp top and a soft middle. The pastry we are best known for.

What is inside follows the day’s bake.

  • A croissant beside a flat white with chocolate shavings, on the wooden counter

    Fresh-filled croissants

Baked in the morning and filled fresh, rather than sitting in the case pre-filled since the day before. That is the whole difference.

  • A custard Danish with crumble, glazed and fresh from the oven

    Danish pastries

The same laminated dough, folded around fruit and custard, baked in the same fresh batches as everything else we make.

  • A sugared cinnamon knot on a plate, the café tables behind

    Cinnamon morning buns

Rolled from the dough left over after we shape the croissants, so there are only ever as many as there are. They sell out, and they sell out early.

Come early. We mean it kindly.

Also on, most days

  • Coffee
  • Iced matcha
  • Tarts
  • Cakes
  • Mini pizzas
  • Cheese straws
  • Vegan options
  • Gluten-free options

We bake everything here, so this list is honest about the day rather than fixed in print. Ask us what just came out.

Our morning

A bakery day, in the order it happens

Laminated dough cannot be hurried and cannot be made the day before. That is why our doors open at eight, and why the good stuff is a morning thing.

  1. Before light

Dough that was proved overnight comes out cold and gets its final folds.

  2. The ovens go on

Croissants, cruffins and Danish go in first. The smell reaches the street before we do.

  3. 8am — doors

The case is at its fullest it will be all day. The coffee machine is already warm.

  4. Through to 4pm

We keep bringing trays out until there are none left. When something is gone, it is gone until tomorrow.

Events & orders

The tables do more than hold coffee

A few evenings and Sundays a year, the counter stops being the point. Everything below has run here at least once.

  • Workshops at our tables

Brush & Brew painting evenings, watercolour Christmas cards, vintage-heart cake decorating, a Mother’s Day cupcake masterclass — taught at our tables, with the good coffee on.

We announce the next dates on Instagram.

  • Seasonal pre-orders

Christmas-morning pastry boxes, Mother’s Day gift boxes, the Valentine’s dipping box. Order ahead, collect from the counter — they go when the season does.

  • Your event, our bake

We take bookings for private events and bigger orders — a workshop for your own group, boxes for an office, a party or a wedding morning.

Email us with dates and numbers.

About

Two bakers, no shortcuts

We are Chandni and Alana, and Luna is ours — a proper independent. Our kitchen is right behind the counter, the person who baked your pastry is usually the person handing it to you, and the size of the day’s bake is decided by what two pairs of hands can laminate before we open.

That is the discipline the whole place is built around. We buy nothing in part-baked, finish nothing off from frozen, and no van restocks our counter at eleven. We take the coffee as seriously as the bake, and work with St Martin’s Coffee Roasters in Leicester. And yes, we sell out — better that than padding the case with something we did not make.

We opened our doors in July 2024 — “coffee and croissant fix from 10am tomorrow” — and turned two in July 2026. Two summers of croissants on what we still think is the cutest street in Loughborough.

Church Gate is pedestrianised outside our door, so we put tables on the street in fair weather. Step-free inside, cards taken, takeaway always.
